it's the guys who are in the beltway, john boehner, mitch mcconnell, the leaders, versus the guys were outside the beltway, the guys, the folks in iowa who handed the iowa caucuses to rick santorum. folks in south carolina to get a primary to newt gingrich. >> i don't mean it at all -- [inaudible] not general elections. >> beyond that though, i feel like the last couple, ever since george w. bush's second term there's been an antiestablishment reaction within the republican party. they were embarrassed, angry at the bush administration. they want small government conservatism. so you get more and more, for lack of a better term, tea party ties but i think everybody lumps too many people into the tea party, sort of coulter and. but you get these types who are determined to come here and do something against leadership. i sat down with john boehner on sunday on a bus going come in ohio, rural ohio. like to sit there and watch the road as you go over bonds and whatnot. he likes the fact a lot of sirens around. but he mentioned that he liked the traffic, if you will. he mentioned this to m

. >> john boehner and mitch mcconnell are professionals when it comes to understanding the art of the deal. we didn't win the elections, didn't get the senate. we have to accept the hand that's been dealt to us. if you don't get to take something off the table unless you put something on the table unless you have got a gun. we don't have a gun. we didn't get that in the election. so what we have got to understand and i'm hoping members of congress will follow the leader and members of the senate will follow their leader. you can't have every republican member of congress and member of the senate trying to create a side deal. that's disaster in the making. they are not going to get everything they want. they have got to get everything they can and protect the american people more than protect party ideology as they try to keep us from falling off the cliff. republicans can't afford to get blamed for this. bill: speaker boehner seems to be speaking the way senator mcconnell speaks. he said people think it means we'll agree to democratic demand and hike taxes. i'm here to tell them there

john boehner, harry reid, mitch mcconnell. they have not been able to reach a deal. will they be able to move forward now? they were saying some nice things yesterday, both harry reid and john boehner. actions speak louder than words. there are many obstacles what they can do in the main -- the lame duck. host: we covered both yesterday at a news conference. let me begin with the speaker was talking about the fiscal clef and really what it comes down to is tax cuts and whether you let them expire. [video clip] >> real economic growth eluded us in the first term of this president. without it, we cannot solve the debt problem. for the purposes of forging a bipartisan agreement, we are willing to accept new revenue under the right conditions. what matters is where the increased revenue comes from and what type of reform comes with it. does the increased revenue come from government taking a larger share of what the american people learned through higher tax rates, or does it come as a buy part -- byproduct of growing the economy energized by a simpler, fairer tax code w

senate majority leader harry reid and senator minority leader mitch mcconnell and nancy pelosi not surprising here. what's the expectation? >> well, you know, we'll see. publicly, suzanne, there has been a much more consillatory tone that we've seen since the election, whether it's from the president or the house speaker john boehner, but i can tell you in talking to sources privately on both sides of the aisle, they admit that it's all about positioning and posturing to make sure at the end of the day if we do go off the fiscal cliff that they're not blamed for it. they're the ones who looked reasonable, not unreasonable, and they're preparing for the other side to blame them for the opposite, if that makes sense. that's a lot of what you are saying in public. the reality is that neither side has a really clear machine date or clear vote and no one wants to look at the end of the day like they never gave compromise a chance. listen to republican bob corker, though, because there does seem to be a little bit of a crack on the republican side on whether or not it's okay to raise some taxes. >>

frankly, i don't know if the republicans themselves, if john boehner and mitch mcconnell, know how much wiggle roop they have at this point. they're still serving their caucuses and trying to figure out where everybody is. that more than anything is going to determine what kind of deal gets made. the democrats are presenting a very united front. they seem very confident. people on the left are very encouraged by the strong statement that the president made on friday. >> you also wrote here in your most recent column that at least at this point it looks like we know which president obama is going to show up for these negotiations. it is not going to be the compromiser in chief. >> right, the sort of tremendously weak negotiator he proved to be on the debt ceiling a year ago is the one democrats were fearful was going to show up again. at least so far you had him pointing to his leverage on friday. that's encouraging for democrats. >> amy, what are the chances that the speaker is going to be able to get some of his folks to fall in line? >> well, it's going to be a very tough task for spe
